Comanche Texas

Hi Erik,  The answer to your question is no. I drove all the way to Comanche Texas to purchase this Scimitar and then turn around and tow it home here to Morgan Hill,California,a total of 3300 miles! I would be happy to meet you, so come on down any time and check ouy my boat. It will be great to compare notes on  restoring these beauties. And let me just say how thankful I am for Ole Red"s friendship and help on putting this boat back together.I consider Red to be my mentor on the"how to" restoration process! I do need to post some current pics and share what I have learned and hopefully pass on a few ideas I have incorporated into rebuilding my boat. Thankfully, the windshield is still in tact, and the original clear gel coat is good. However, it took a considerable amount of time and "elbow grease" to restore the luster. Erik, give me a call and let's talk boats! My phone # is  408-778-5077, days or eves. Best regards,  Bill

RE: Drag Prop

Hi Eric, OleRed here:

It's has always interesed me that almost everyone calls the Scimitar the James Bond boat,  when it was not actually the boat in the movie, that was a CV-23HT.
I believe the boats used in that movie "MoonRaker" were modified CV-23's for that movie, only 4 of them were modified, and those 4 had Berkley jet drive.  I don't know how many of the CV-23HT were made after the movie, but very few, and the only one I've seen come with a Mercruiser drive.

Art Carlson told me that they did look at the Scimitar for the movie but it was still in production at the time and one of the major hold-ups getting the Scimitar finished was the windshield.  Art ordered the tempered glass windshield for these boats three times, the first and second one's they got didn't fit the boat, the third windshield didn't exactly fit the boats either, so they actually modified the boats to fit those windshields.  Getting an original windshield for one of the Scimitars today would be a real thin chance of finding one,  thats why I had the winshield for your boat made out of arcryic, and don't let anyone convience you that lexan would be better because it's not.  That boat had a tinted Lexan windshield in it when we bought it, it was scratched up and looked awful.

good to meet you bill, did you happen to buy the scimitar here in sacramento california? i believe that one was a1981 and it was blue green, sold for about $5000.00? the sellers called it the james bond boat, they all seem to call it that when it has a glastron name on it. lets meet, i would love to come down and see yours some time, what are you doing with yours? do you have any pictures of its current condition? do you still have the glass winsheild?

Ahoy Erik

Welcome to the Scimitar Forum, My name is Bill and Ole Red told me that you recently purchased George's Scimitar. Congratulations to you as you have accquired a very fine boat indeed! I live in the South San Jose area here in California and understand that you are located somewhere between Sacramento and Lake tahoe? If you are interested in net working or comparing notes on the restoration process I would be happy to engage in conversation with you, either through this venue or by phone. About a year and a half ago I purchased a 1981 Scimitar [with help from Ole Red and another gentlemen by the name of Larry]. I am having a blast working on this very cool boat and hope to have her in the water by mid Fall. So, I wish you the best and hope to hear back from you.     Bill

I got that Scimitar for George, it was a good project, it had a good transom and the floor had been replace two years before we bought it.  I cleaned it out and built the seats,  installed the new motor, carpet, and re-built the trailer.  George had the upholstry done by another shop, and the paint as well.

Have you seen the project page of boat.

RE: Drag Prop

wow, thanks for the details, that was just what i wanted to here. do you know if jeorge happened to do the same with his hull by reinforcing with more cloth and adding foam? and as far as the transom changes i dont think ill want to go back into cuting it up ti make those similar changes, ill just need to settle for what i have now and just work on the higher hp's and props. whats cool about omc is that they came out with hydrolic lift trim cyinders for the motor, my sea ray 270 had twin omc 350 with the trim hydrolics to gain different degrees, that boat weighed in at 10,000 lbs and she would cut through ocean at 60mph, very impressive. well ive got some other doodads to replace at this point so we'll work on all that stuff in do time. so keep up all the testing for us all. what would be nice is if i could find a scimitar that was in poor shape so i could do the complete resto myself and acheive some of the same results and improvments that your getting. thanks, erik

Hi There Eric,  good to see ya here.

I did make a few of changes to the transom on this one, when I re-built it, I raised the "X" dimention 2 1/2 inches that really came out almost 3" when it was done, I also moved the transom back 5" and changed the rake of the transom from 12 to 8 degrees .   I removed almost 200 pounds of weight off the motor by putting on the new aluminum high performance manifolds, they weigh 54 pounds, the others weighed 160 pounds, changed out the 47 pound flywheel for a 4 1/4 pound flex-plate.  I had to machine the coupler to fit into the end of the crank and precision drill holes for it to bolt to the flex-plate, it seems to be holding up ok, but I can tell why they run a flywheel,  I get a little vibration in turns and holeshots. The little high torque started was 9 pounds lighter than the old one, aluminum high volume water pump, Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and a new Edlebrock performer carb.  It's firing on the early style Thunderbolt ignition, 32 degrees total advance.

The motor came out of a 2000 Chevy 3/4 ton truck  that was totaled out, it's a 4 bolt main motor with the thick cylinder walls.  I had the motor bored .060, the heads milled .030 and the deck just cleaned up about .010  speed pro forged pistons, steel rings.  The heads are the vortec heads, but the machine shop cut down the quides a little and installed "Z" springs and retainers, stainless steel Manley valves and teflon seals.   The cam is a custom grind,  but it is the same grind as the Chevy "Hot Cam" that comes in the Corvettes but the shop advanced the grind 2 degrees, it is a roller cam.    I'm running the 1.5 rockers to reduce the lift of the cam some,  it's pushing 497 lift and 287 duration with a power range from 1500 to 5500 rpm.  I asked the guys at the machine shop how much hp they thought this motor would produce and they agreed that it is probably 425 / 435 hp but thats just an educated guess,  it would be interesting to know for sure.

The drive is a 1996 Gen II ,  it was a 1.84 ratio when I first got it, so I ran a 15 1/8 X 27 pitch Solas prop on it and was running 63 mph that way.  I had the drive re-built with 1.47 ratio gears and am running a 14 1/4 X 23 PowerTech that has been labbed and pushed up to a 24 pitch,  they done a lot of work to this prop,  made 2 mph difference by the lab work,  it runs consistantly 65 / 66 mph by the gps, ocassionally 68 in choppy water,  the best I've seen on the gps is 69.2 but that was with a prop that would only go fast,  took for Ever to get the air out of it to take hold, and it would blow out in any turn.  This prop will stay hooked up in turns at speed and won't blow out in choppy water like most of the others I try'd, 16 or 17 props to get to where it is now.

The prop I'm running in this last video is a 14 X 19 KonFu 4 blade that I've never seen before, it hooks up well, holds the bow up a little and won't blow out on any turn,  and it handles the boat really well,  just not as fast a prop as the PowerTech, and it's turning 5800 rpm but a Lot faster out of the hole.  I'll keep both props to play with but I don't plan on turning my motor at these rpms all that much, but it is fun.

The PowerTech is running it's speed at 4800 / 5000 rpm wide open and it handles real well, kinda flighty maybe, but still got pretty good control.

Another thing I did to this hull,  I re-inforced it with 25 pounds of 24 ounce woven mat when I replaced the stringers, and filled the hull with foam as I layed the new floor in, it's really ridgid now and feels good on the waves,  before I done that the boat rattled and shook pretty bad in choppy water.

so can you explain what iy is that you've done with the motor and outdrive? i was wondering what kind of vortec and outdrive your using and if they are a good match so far. and your using what, a cleaver prop?i was considering starting a new motor project and getting the 400 plus hp out of it but with a different outdrive, maybe bravo? what do you think the limmit is for these boats and does she feel comfortable and stable at the 63mph? what would be a safe goal for speed max?
