Good Luck on finding an original windshield, I looked for one a long time with no resuluts, There was a fellow that used to be on here found one, but he didn't reveal where he found it. The windshield was one of the hold-ups getting the Scimitars on the market, Art ordered the windshields for these boats twice, the first ones didn't fit, acordint to Art, the second order didn't fit well either, so Carlson actually made the boats fir the windshields. I was told they were an automotive windshield, from a 1979 to 1982 fullsize Cadillac, that was not right, the automotive windshields are 72 inches wide, the Scimitar windshield is 77 inches, if I remember right. I had an arcrylic windshield made for one I worked on. The plactic company tryed twice to mold one, but both came out distorted, so I just had them cut a flat one and I sctewed it down.
The carpet that came in these boats were a shag carpet with a burlap looking backing, I think it was a marine /RV carpet alright, but I havent found any like it, I just put outdoor carpet in my boats from Home Depot, it's cheap, easy to lay and it looks alright. I don't build any show boats, and I'm not one to big on keeping my boat original, I have made a few modifications to mine to suit me. My boat looks pretty good from the dock to the ramp, but it's far from original.
I was not able to find the exact carlson letters, but George has an address of the one's we bought that are real close, but not exact. I bought the brown vinal from a local shop, not exact, but real close, it looks pretty good.
I to am new to the world of Simitar although I did have a new 1978 CV 23 with the ford 460 and 12 JE pump. My new Simitar is an '80 version that is in great shape. I am interested if anyone knows if or where I might obtain the original brown vinyl for the interior and the carpet?
Welcome to the site Stephen ! glad to see another Scimitar owner
I have built a couple of the vortecs up for my boat, works really well. Here's what I have in my Scimitar now, it's a 2000 vortec 5.7 I took out of a 1 ton truck, the truck blocks have thicker cylinder walls. I bored this motor .060, flat top pistons, just cleaned up the deck .010, flat top pistons, stainless manley valves, Z springs and retainers, and milled the heads some, the cam is a 510 lift 297 duration I think, don't have the spec's in front of me right now, but it's a Hot one. I went back with an Edlebrock aluminum intake and an Edlebrock performer 600 cfm carb, Mercruiser Thunderbolt electronic ignition.
I removed almost 200 pounds from the motor by using the aluminum high performance exhaust manifolds, aluminum water pump, high torque starter that is 9 pounds lighter than the original, I first run a flex plate rather than the 47 pound fly wheel, but itr cracked, so I went back with a flywheel from a 4.3 vortec, works well.
I rebuilt the transom, moved it back 5 inches, raised the "X" dimention almost 3 inches, changed the rake of the transom from 12 to 8 degrees so the u-joints would be running true when I'm trimmed up and running at speed. The best speed I've recorded on the gps is 71.2 mph, but the gps gets mad and shuts down when I'm going fast because of the vibration from the waves, a few weeks ago it ran faster than ever, just enough waves to get a lot of air under the hull, and my prop loves the cold water, the speedo was indicating on the left side of the M at the bottom ... MPH, at the speed 71.2 the speedo was indicating justy on the left side of the P .. LOL
bought a scimitar - serial number GOVl 70 G(6) 1M8lA - supposed to be 1982-Engine is bagged -wasn't winteriized block is completely fragged -big pieces misssing- have a vortec truck 350 sitting on the engine stand and thinking on installing it but going to a 1 piece rear main is starting to look like a major pain. Starting with different adapter to the mercruiser cause of differnt flywheel hole size, differnet flywheel the 153 tooth is a lot harder to find -vortec intake - the distrib. gear also has to be changed for the roller cam - If Iam going that far would like to step up the cam -,maybe the Ramjet The boat itself is not bad Iwill post some pictures asap The only thing actually missing are the exaust manifolds and 1 panel top and its hardware. The interior is all out as it is out getting redone it wasn't ripped just old and faded. the floors have all been redone -new stringers & reinforcing from front to back I would appreciate any and all suggestions as to what to do about the motor and cam selection I should add that that I bought a supposedly complete mercuiser vortec fuel injection set up at at the portland swap meet for $350.00 it does appear to be complete with even extra parts like fuel pumps. who has the best manual for these things. I am a hot rod / muscle car guy so this is going to be my water hot rod - always thought they were way cool looking and finally got the chance to own one. So here I am feel free to call or email me 604-530-6509 or 604-240-6370 Thanks
