why making it easy, we tried to add a fresh water cooling system (Monitor MFH-5398) to the block.
The V4 exhaust manifolds are still cooled by raw water. I have an old alpha one (Gen1) in use and everything is working fine until we push the machine over 3000 rpm`s.
Then, the temperature rises rapidly over 220°F and the cooler starts to overcook.
Does somebody made a similar experience and has a solution to fix this?
We`re thinking about putting in a separate water pump to increase the water flow rate?! Then, the question is, leaving the impeller in position or putting it out?
OK, let`s roll up the sleeves and start the project.
I got the motor out and found a car-serial-number (3970010) on the block. looks like, that bob`s marine in modesto sold me a different motor than it was noted in the boat papers
Anyway, I go and get a newer 5,7l Vortec that will be refurbished by a motor-tuning-shop to better specs. than factory-tolerances.
I keep the ignitor and the flywheel. If somebody is interested in parts, contact me.
Thank You for Your comforting words, Robert. Yeah, i try to post things on my way through this new adventure
Would like to find out which engine is in my one. I couldn`t find a motor number, now my croation motor technician is asking me for it as well because he couldn`t find it either. I checked some webpages, maybe it is a 280 TRS (GM 359CIS/5,7l; 1975-1986) ??? This would match the year of manufacture of the hull, 1982.
If somebody has an idea, please share it with me. thanx

Bruno....feel your pain!! We've all been there. Only advice is once your this deep is to do it right whether you rebuild or buy new. Good luck and keep us posted along the way.
The motor guy, Jakov, said that the exhaust manifolds are done, one cylinder (fotos) has a damage and the the crankshaft bearings are in need of repair as well.
Guess, I won the jackpot
His advise is, to buy a new machine, the transom and the z-drive (alpha 1 second generation or Bravo 1) in a package.
...maybe I should take the rest of the day off and walk on some wet grass, barefoot!

Last Year I had a brand new Mercruiser Remanufactured Engine installed ..."350 MPI Alpha" (300HP/5.8). It just fit in my Scimitar. I'm not a motor guys either and some of these guys can help you more however I did get that new engine in...barely. Might have had to move the back bench seat forward about 1/2 inch or so. Height cleared as well. Had to put a thru hull fitting in the hull for more cooling power for that engine. Hope this helps some.
my motor started to run "unround", i found out that there is some water-oil emusion at the oil filler caps. Some waters drops are at the carburetor, its fuming al litte while running. We havn't checked the compression of the cylinders yet, the ignitions sparks are all working.
Have to start as a novice when it comes to motor details....
Maybe it`s the cylinder head gasket, eventually the water is coming from the exhaust manifolds? I will find it out with a companioned mechanic, a local croation guy at the Dalmations coast, where the boat is stored.
I would like to ask You for a recommendation of an engine that will fit in and that will cause a manageable effort in replacing, if we couldn't get the old one repaired.
I have seen the postings of Ole`s motor change and feel uncertain if to put a more modern Vortec into it and which modifications have to be done? It is a Alpha gen 1 on it. There is a guy who is selling exhaust manifolds in stainless steel (V4). Is it advisable, putting them in?
Do not need high speed, like to drive 25 up to 40 knots, better would be a workhorse which responds quickly in some choppy sea condition.
Thank You in advance for any good recommendations.
